On Runs in Independent Sequences

Given an i.i.d. sequence of n letters from a finite alphabet, we consider the length of the longest run of any letter. In the equiprobable case, results for this run turn out to be closely related to the well-known results for the longest run of a given letter. For coin-tossing, tail probabilities are compared for both kinds of runs via Poisson approximation.

Finding Large Independent Sets

This lecture deals with the problem of proper vertex colorings of graphs. More speciically, we are interested in coloring a given 3-colorable graph with as few colors as we can. It is easy to see that it is NP-Hard to nd a 3 coloring for any given 3-colorable graph-this would enable deciding whether a general graph is 3-colorable. If a polynomial-time algorithm existed for 3-coloring a 3-colora...

Finding Near-Optimal Independent Sets at Scale

The independent set problem is NP-hard and particularly difficult to solve in large sparse graphs. In this work, we develop an advanced evolutionary algorithm, which incorporates kernelization techniques to compute large independent sets in huge sparse networks. A recent exact algorithm has shown that large networks can be solved exactly by employing a branch-and-reduce technique that recursive...

Finding Hidden Independent Sets in Interval Graphs

Consider a game in a given set of intervals (and their implied interval graph G) in which the adversary chooses an independent setX in G. The goal is to discover this hidden independent set X by making the fewest queries of the form “Is point p covered by an interval inX?” Our interest in this problem stems from two applications: experimental gene discovery with PCR technology and the game of B...

A Further Note on Runs in Independent Sequences

Given a sequence of letters generated independently from a finite alphabet, we consider the case when more than one, but not all, letters are generated with the highest probability. The length of the longest run of any of these letters is shown to be one greater than the length of the longest run in a particular state of an associated Markov chain. Using results of Foulser and Karlin (19...
